Name: Marley Dias
Occupation: Activist
Award Title: For Seeing a Problem and Taking Positive Action to Fix It
Marley Dias noticed that there weren't very many books in her school library about black girls. She wanted to change that, so she started a drive to find more books about black girls.
I love reading and I love reading all kinds of books. I think it is important that if we want the world to be a better place where everyone feels welcomed and understood then we must sure that children have books about black girls, and all kinds of people, not just white boys and dogs.
-Marley Dias
Her resource guide includes 1,000 books, and can be filtered by age/reading level. Yes, there are even suggestions for adults, which will make their way into my reading list.
Listen, I'm not all about to say that it's only impressive because she's young. It IS impressive for a 12-year-old to do this, but there are a lot of youthful activists. Ms. Dias not only took action, but she took positive action: she decided to compile a resource guide and collection of books to help change things. She is highlighting what she wants to see in the world and she's doing an awesome job at it.
