This Week in Church: The good life

Welcome to the series wherein I share my take-aways from church. The things that, I think, are beneficial to all of us to know or think about, whether or not we believe in any church-related things.

I think that church can teach things that are beneficial to everyone, whether or not we believe in church-related things.

This week in church we talked about the good life.

Call and response time, what is the good life? Community. To love and be loved. Good food. Belonging. Yes, yes, and yessssss to good food.

Whatever our vision of the good life is, whether we realize it or not, it's shaping us. The choices we make, the people and things we prioritize, they all point towards our version of the good life.

This week in church we talked about thinking vs. desiring.

This was the question: what if we aren't thinking things, but desiring things?

What if Descartes was wrong? It's not, "I think, therefore I am", but our desires that shape our existence.

Maybe this is another way of looking at the question of our vision of the good life. Our desires will push our behaviour a lot more than the things we decide in our heads.

This week in church we shared an Instagram prayer.

I mean, there were lots of prayers shared, but here's one from Scott the Painter that he shared on Instagram:

"Free me from that which lessens my life."

Oooooh yeah.
