Inspiration! Protest dance, failure, escaping the grid, looking away, and more

Inspiration comes from many things: dance, freedom, and even Rey from Star Wars
This week's "I want to go to there": Anywhere with a campfire and tea.
Freedom

Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre is one of the most spectacular dance companies in America, period. Some dancers from Alvin Ailey got together on their own time and put together a protest dance set to Beyoncé's Freedom. It is stunning:

The Seven Laws of Failure

As a person who always has five thousand and three ideas, I know how easy it is to suddenly realize you haven't acted on a goal for months or even years. Sure, there's some freedom in letting go and not expecting yourself to master everything, but we're also happiest when we are working towards a goal. So what's holding you back this time? Here are seven laws of failure that can help us all identify what we're waiting for.

If my five thousand and three ideas didn't give it away, one of my biggest obstacles is #5: a plurality of goals. It's so hard to prioritize when you get equally excited about all your ideas! How do you do it? (No, really, how?)

Off the Grid

Every once in a while I dream of just leaving everything behind and living off the grid. Putting up a yurt somewhere in the forrest, growing my own food, and being one with nature. Of course, that is terribly unrealistic and I would get bored very quickly (so off the grid, but near the city, is my aim).

It seems impossible, but there are people who live off the grid, not far from Vancouver, for decades on end.

Look the Other Way

Photographer Oliver Curtis has a habit of taking pictures of the wrong things. Starting in Cairo when he realized that the scenery around the pyramids was gorgeous, his photo series Volte-face goes to famous sites and takes pictures facing the other way.

What a glorious reminder that there's more to see than the thing everyone is looking at.

Mind the Gap
"There's a space between where you are now and where you want to be, ought to be, are capable of being... The magic of forward movement is seeing the space as leap-sized, as something that persistent, consistent effort can get you through."
-Seth Godin
Girl Power

You know how sometimes you don't realize how much something means to you until you notice that it's making you cry? Looking at this photo series of little girls dressed as Rey from Star Wars did that for me. I felt that there was significance to having a female lead in the Star Wars movie back when I watched it, but it didn't hit home what a difference this will make for little girls now until seeing these photos.

I mean, you just can't beat having a strong, smart, capable character to emulate and look up to. The best I had were a bunch of Disney Princesses, and dressing up like them mostly involved finding ways to make their costumes show less skin (hello cleavage and midriff!) while still looking like them.
