Seeing as today is Wednesday, perhaps I should be saying "Hump Days, amiright?" instead. Either way, this picture kind of sums up a lot of my feelings of late. I don't want to wallow in my "hide from the world" feelings too much, but don't you also get a sweet feeling of relief when you see an image that perfectly sums up your feelings? Now let's all go hide... Or, okay, no. Let's not hide. Let's face life and enjoy it because there is a lot of good out there.

This week's "I want to go to there": weird robot fun.

Dancing on the moonlight

There's a stunning photo series of three dancers doing ballet on the surface of the moon (okay, fine, it's not the real moon, it's a set) that I just love. There is an alleged mystery attached to it - it was taken on the set of an old film called Destination Moon, but wasn't a part of the film itself.

Now, people are treating this like some crazy conundrum, when I can think of three fantastic explanations: 1) the actors were goofing around between takes and someone took photos, 2) it was meant to go over the title sequence at the end (or something like that) and got cut, or 3) this is actually the moon and they all teleported there for a photoshoot and then sworn to secrecy about it (but were allowed to release the images).

Regardless of where the photos came from, they are gorgeous and otherworldly (pun not intended, but recognized).

tea&bannock

The blog tea&bannock should be read by everyone! It is made up of photographs and stories by Indigenous women and it is beautiful. The images are beautiful. The stories are beautiful. Its creator describes how it began, and the story is beautiful:
“I want a community, a group of women I can talk to about editing, and writing, and art, and what it means processing all of that through Indigenous eyes,” I said. “I want a place where we lift each other up, and support one another.“

“So start it,” my friend said.

Like Lady Gaga, Just Dance

I am a HUGE advocate of dancing it out. There is something in the act of moving to music that can solve a world of ills. Here is a letter of recommendation in the NY Times for the video game Just Dance as a brilliant dance and workout option: "I am elevating my heart rate, but I am also sidestepping the self."

She's got a point. When you dance - and I mean really dance, as in, the-music-moves-you-arms-akimbo-feet-flailing-everything-is-free dance - you let yourself go. Self-consciousness, self-awareness, and basically all concept of self must be set aside. You are a body and some music, and that's it.

Try it! Use the video game or DIY the thing with music and a bit of floor. Either way, just dance!

Minimalist Mantras

Minimalism is all the rage right now (she says, sitting in her apartment filled with books, mementos, and now multiple shelves of fossils). Apartment Therapy has put together a collection of mantras to help us keep our brains and lives as minimal as our homes are supposed to be: this too shall pass; just say no; don't borrow trouble; less is more.

This too shall pass: one of my favourite lessons from my yoga teacher training is the reminder that everything changes. This too shall pass applies to the bad and the good. Live in the moment that is happening and don't worry too much about holding onto it or pushing it away. This is not easy.

Just say no: this is too hard. I don't know how to do this.

Don't borrow trouble: also hard. I feel other peoples' feelings quite a lot. One of my psych profs called me "a high empathy person", which I like because it makes me sound like a kindness superhero, but in reality sometimes I borrow someone else's trouble.

Less is more: you mean I don't have to do everything? I can do less, and do it well, and that will be worth more?

Get in there and do something

Ever since reading Brené Brown's Daring Greatly, I see variations on this quote all the time.

Question is: what is the relationship between "less is more" and getting into the arena? I suppose it has something to do with not getting into every single arena. And perhaps refraining from commenting on the activity in other arenas.

Learning! Dance every day to be happier, healthier, and sexier

Dancing leads to increased health, happiness, and sex appeal

Dancing is, I think, one of the best things a person can ever do with their time. I've never been able to explain what it is about dancing that feels so good, but, dang it, it just does.

There is a host of research out there on the benefits of dancing - and I just dug up yet another article outlining the benefits of cutting a rug.

First, there are the slightly-intangible emotional and mental effects like increased satisfaction, creativity, and energy, as well as reduced depression and anxiety.

Then there's the fact that women are more attracted to men who take risks on the dance floor.

Then there is the fact that senior citizens who dance have improved cognitive performance over non-dancers, including reduced signs of dementia.

The beauty of this is that dancing requires nothing more than music - in your ears or in your heart! Just turn on some music and move around. No equipment or lessons needed (remember, the ladies weren't most attracted to the men who were the most skilled dancers, but the ones who took risks! Just do your thing.)

Learning! Dance your way to a happier heart


I love dancing!  I have long been convinced that nothing makes you happier than moving your body around to music - it's the best way to let go of your brain and not only get your heart pumping but also (to embrace the corniness) get your heart smiling.  Turns out, I was right!

According to science (aka numerous studies individually credited in this article), dancing lifts energy, eases tension, increases creativity and may even help reduce symptoms of depression and Parkinson's.  It increases the longevity of motor skills throughout life and boosts cognitive performance.

Learning! How to Join Girls on the Dance Floor

I love dancing.  I also kind of hate clubs.  Every once and a while, my love for dancing will outweigh my hate for clubs and I'll go to a club and try to ignore all the things I hate about being there so I can dance because dancing is the best.  Generally I dance like a bit of a crazy person so the number one annoyance of clubbing (guys grinding up on you out of nowhere) is not a big issue for me.  Guys are, I suspect, a little bit too afraid to grind up on the girl who is flailing her arms all over the place on the dance floor.

Still, there is a conundrum often at play for dudes who have hit the club: they want to dance with a girl, but don't know how to break into her little circle without risking the ever-terrifying rejection.

There are a few tactics that I have observed: hovering awkwardly around the outside of her circle, right beside her, so that if she even turns around a little bit she'll be accidentally dancing with him; grabbing her from behind and grinding his junk on her, hoping she'll be all like, "oh yes, stranger, please rub yourself all over me"; or stepping up to her, extending a hand with a questioning expression on his face, as if to say "may I have this dance?"  So far, my favourite is the third, but I know it's also the scariest.  

Turns out, there is another way!  Youtuber (is that how you spell it when you talk about a person who makes Youtube videos?) Howcast has an instructional video on how to join girls dancing.  It's great!  Watch and learn!


She also has a ton more videos with dancing tips, so let the training montage ensue as you clumsily follow along and then emerge like a sexy dancing butterfly on the other side.


How to Use Dance Floor Jams for the Greater Good


People say that they don't like to be told what to do.  I say I don't like to be told what to do.  Unfortunately, people like Beyonce, Daft Punk, Fergie, Ludacris, and even S Club 7, have shown that we are all liars.

Go to any dance floor, any day, and watch people act like a bunch of sheeple (that's punk teen-code combining the word "sheep" with the word "people", implying that the people are just a bunch of sheep-like followers, in case you weren't a pseudo-punk teen in the 90's and didn't catch that), doing whatever the singer is telling them to do.

They tell us to wave our hands in the air and most people obediently wave their arms side to side over their heads, like they are at a very unconventional youth worship conference.

They instruct us ladies in the specific ways we should shake different parts of their bodies, and again, we are more than happy to oblige.

Luckily, we don't take the commands too literally.  When told to wave our hands in the air "like we just don't care", we generally keep the waving to a youth conference-level of extremity, because we all care about not getting hit in the face.

After I realized this great power the singers of dance hits have over us, it occurred to me that these people could actually change the world for the better and influence positive social change.  So here are some of my suggestions on new things that the singers of Dance Hits 2016 could tell us to do:

Instead Of... How About...
Fatman Scoop singing "You got a twenty dollar bill, put your hands up!"... "You gonna donate twenty to a meaningful cause, put your hands up!"
Daft Punk's repetition of "Put your hands up in the air" over and over and over again.... Repeating "Forgiveness is the key", instead.
Ludacris' simple cry of "Hands up!" in Get Back... "Arms out!" (and then everyone hugs their neighbour.)
Beyonce saying "Now put your hands up!" in Single Ladies... "Now communicate! (With your partner about your true needs and expectations for the relationship.)"
Luke Bryan's demand that country girls "Shake it for [him]" "Country girl, ride your horse as an alternate to driving and consuming more fossil fuels."
Outkast's famous command to "Shake it like a polaroid picture" as a reward to the male singers for doing their job and playing music... "Enjoy life and love your neighbour!"
"Shak[ing] your body from side to side" as S Club 7 orders... "Look a problem from someone else's side."

One that should stay just the way it is: when Nelly calls out "If you ever loved somebody put your hands up!"

Sing it, Nelly!  Celebrate love!

As a slight feminist postscript, I wish that more ladies sang songs commanding that the men shake for them.  Not only would it even things out a bit more, which is always a nice thing to do, but it would maybe motivate more dudes to learn how to shake their booties with more gusto, which is fun for everyone.  Equality of shaking body parts!  Shaking body parts for all!

Yes, I am one of those people playing Shake it Off all the time.  To the point where I was standing on a corner with my hood up in the rain by myself, singing it in alternating falsetto and super-deep-chest-voice, when the light turned and I realized that I wasn't alone.  People had been standing behind me that whole time.  So now I am making this my singlaong of the week, partially because I am still riding the T-Swift Train and partially because my friend thought she was saying "bakers gotta bake bake bake bake bake", and so we need a public education in the actual lyrics.

I have to admit, I first heard this song in the Gap ad circa 2000.  I still kind of love the dancing in the ad, but also love the song.  And Queen.  I had no idea that they were actually so awesome until embarrassingly late in life (I blame my childhood diet of Amy Grant and Sandi Patti - glorious on their own, but somewhat incomplete).

Many years ago a friend of mine made me a mix CD. When he asked what I wanted it to be, I helpfully replied, "songs that will make me happy!" He delivered, and the whole album was full of some delightful discoveries that really brightened my day. The peach on the top of the pile, however, was the final song of the album: the old hit by King Harvest, "Dancing in the Moonlight". What a joyful number! I remembered it from my days of listening to oldies radio, and to this day have a hard time listening to it without dancing, at least a bit.

This song is pure high school dance for me.  My distinct memory of it was it coming on at a dance (I'm going to guess grade 9).  I made fun of the dance moves and the lyrics about a desperate girl wanting to get back together with her man.  Then my friend informed me that it's about her friend who died and and felt like a big ol' jerk.  It's a great song though!

I have a friend who's birthday is near Halloween.  One year she decided to take advantage and have a dress up party, which I thoroughly approved of.  I find that the older I get, the less people are willing to dress up for parties and the more often theme parties are flops, which makes me sad.  The combo of a birthday, Halloween, and cool friends made this party a hit.  Specifically, we were instructed to dress up like our childhood heroes, and guess who I dressed up as?  (This is where you find out why on earth I'm talking about a friend's birthday in a singalong post…)  Amy Grant!  Amy Grant, people.  I dressed as Amy Grant, on the cover of this album.  Because she is the best.

Also, I love this video!  The part at the beginning where a guy tries to give Amy a gift he was giving to his (presumably) girlfriend, because Amy is so amazing!  Then all the other parts where her and her man are the cutest, funnest, goofiest couple of all time.  Dreams do come true.

singalong! celebrating ladies with leslie knope (aka the best break up playlist of all time)

This week's singalong isn't just one song - it's an entire list. Specifically, Songza's list entitled Celebrating Ladies with Leslie Knope.


There are many reasons to be thrilled about Songza's extravaganza of positive ladies. I give you two:

First, Leslie Knope is one of the most wonderful, inspiring female characters on television who is fiercely feminist in the most positive and uplifting way a person could be. She is smart and fun and mayyyybe a little pushy, but only out of love. She also says "ovaries before brovaries", so, you know, score.

Second, this is one of the best playlists to listen to after a break up. I suspected this would be the case from the first time I discovered it, and have recently found this to be, in fact, true. (Which means that, yes, I am going through the whole "break up" thing right now - oh yay.)

I am a big believer in using music strategically to improve your life. I know it can be tempting to just revel in the pain during hard times, but I find that I get sucked into an abyss of darkness easily enough without sad songs to help me get there. During my last break up, which was of the true rip-my-heart-out-and-stomp-it-to-bits-while-I-offer-you-more-opportunities-for-the-same-type break up, I made a playlist of upbeat songs that I listened to at least once a day. This time, I realized I didn't need to - I had one offered up and waiting for me.

inspiration! britney

I know I'm going to lose a lot of respect, posting this as my first-ever Inspiration! post. But there are two things about this song and video that inspire me:

1) It is vintage Britney. That girl has finally swung back around from the very very very hard times she was going through. Sure, it would be nice if her comeback wasn't so closely linked to her hot bod, but more than that, she appears to finally be owning it again. That makes me happy and makes me feel like if she can come back, anyone can. (Also, check out those baggy pants and crop top - so Hit Me Baby, One More Time!

2) The message. I have oft been teased for examining the messages in pop songs, but everything has a message and so does this. What's this message? You want something, go out and work for it. No promises that you'll get it, but it sure ain't going to come to you if you sit around and wait. Go Britney!
