Inspiration! Roundup: Creative until you die, male make up models for Covergirl AND Maybelline, ancient prayer beads, Bowie's favourite books, and some stunning art
This Week's "I want to go to there":
Sitting at the end of a dock on a warm summer night.

Creative Until You Die

Forget those '20 Under 20' lists, how about nine incredible performers who are over 90 and just won't stop working? These folk are a real inspiration.

Maybe He's Born With It

The world is changing! Last fall, Covergirl made history by signing a male model, and now Maybelline has followed suit. I don't care if this is marketing, it is two incredibly mainstream companies presenting boys in make up. Do you know how normalizing that is? How powerful it will be for throwing out stupid gender roles? I don't either, but I think it will make a big difference.

16th Century Prayer Beads

Check out these incredible, intricately carved prayer beads. They are actual entire worlds inside the palm of your hand. The craftsmanship is just mind-boggling! Check out more photos on the AGO Website.

Hidden Sources of Light

I am absolutely taken by this art series by Andrew "Mackie" McIntosh, placing majestic sunsets inside of everyday, abandoned objects (like trailers).

Gorgeous artwork putting sunsets inside unusual, abandoned objects.
"Merlin" by Mackie.

These Windows are Eyes

Have you ever looked at a building and felt like its windows were eyes? So has graffiti artist Achilles.

Bowie's Books

Need some reading recommendations? Why not start chipping your way through David Bowie's 75 favourite books? You'll get reading material for years to come AND some insight into one creative genius.

As an aside, someone needs to open a bookstore and call it Bowie's Books.

If Harry Potter Was a Black Rapper

Yep.

The Keto Challenge: Updates

Keto Diet update. One week in, how's it going? What am I eating? Will I survive?
Moon Cheese: The best Keto blessing.

I'm a little over a week into my keto challenge. How is it going?

On one hand...

It's way easier than a lot of the other diet challenges I've done. Because it's so high in fat, it's really satisfying. I get to eat cheese and peanut butter. I enjoy my favourite miso dressing and eat so many delicious avocados. Love it.

I have experienced a little of the "keto flu" - a temporary feeling of illness as your body transitions into ketosis.

If you're wondering, here's what I've been eating:

Breakfast: 3 egg scramble with veggies, avocado, and cheese. (This week we're trying a pre-made frittata instead to cut down on morning cooking, but it's the same contents.)

Lunch: Salad (spring mix) with nuts, avocado, and/or cheese, SMOTHERED in miso dressing.

Snack: Cheese stick or fat bomb.

Dinner: Varies, some kind of veggie-coated-in-cheese thing usually.

Throughout the day I drink a lot of water, green tea, and one or two black teas with some heavy cream.

Also, MOON CHEESE! I have really been missing the crunchy, salty snack I generally find in chips and popcorn. Moon Cheese is the answer to all these problems. It is crunchy balls of cheese and it is delicious.

On the other hand...

BIG SIGH.

I miss carbs.

I had to bake a cake for some friends, and I couldn't eat any. I couldn't even taste test it as I went to make sure it worked out well.

I sometimes imagine the wonderful feeling of toast in my mouth. I get to eat peanut butter, but not on toast! Not. On. Toast. I also have not eaten a croissant. A delicious, incredible croissant. These foods taste good, yes, but there is a lovely feel to baked goods when you eat them. Filling your mouth with warm goodness. (And yes, I realize how dirty this could all come across, but I don't know how else to describe the feeling of eating delicious baked goods without sounding dirty. Mouth feel is a thing, guys! It's a thing and it matters.)

Plus, my post-counselling routine is to go for a croissant, and maybe some Timbits so that I can replenish all my feelings with carbs. Fat is delicious, but it's not the same. SIGH.

It's weird that it's really not that hard, and yet I want to quit really really badly. I'm going to keep pushing through because I'm curious if that will go away once I adapt or not.

Three... weeks... to go.

This Week in Church: Grace and Fear

I have been going to church for more or less my entire life, and lately I haven't really been feeling "it" - whatever that means. I do believe, though, that every church service has some take-away that is good for everyone to consider, no matter their religious background. In an attempt to better connect with the goodness church has to offer, without needing fuzzy spiritual feelings, I will share my take-aways.

This week in church, we talked about grace.

Specifically, it was a community sharing week, where people were invited to get up and share where they had experienced grace in the past year, or where they needed grace now. I didn't get up and share (goodness me, I save all my really personal revelations for strangers on the internet, thanks you.)

What is grace? There was no fancy church definition, but I think of grace as love, acceptance, and help where I don't necessarily deserve it.

One of my favourite things is when church reminds me that I need more than myself - that I am not a god or superhero or shining perfectly-self-sufficient human. Sure, I am capable, but without the grace of others (and maybe God?), where would I actually be?

I feel like spiritual engagement means walking a line between recognizing that I am a glorious miracle who is loved in her wholeness AND that I am incomplete and oh so needy. Somehow, I get to be both.

This week in church, we talked about fear.

In a very simple way: someone (the pastor? I actually don't remember) asked, "What are you afraid of?"

A lot. I am afraid of so much. I had a short bout of empty time in the afternoon and started making a list of the things I am afraid of. The magical power of writing and naming my fears lifted some of their power over my heart and brain, and that was pretty spectacular.

Winter Lights: A plea

Let's stop calling them Christmas lights and start calling them WINTER lights.

Last year I noticed that some households were keeping their Christmas lights up far into January, and even the beginning of February. This year the trend seems to be continuing.

Historically, this has been called tacky and other bad things, but I am here with a proposal: let's just stop calling them Christmas lights, and then we don't have to worry about tackiness.

From this day forward, they are WINTER LIGHTS, bringing light and warmth into a dark and sad time that extends far beyond one holiday. By renaming them, we'll remove any implications of the tacky and open our arms wide to the extra light, inviting it to pierce through our hearts, cold and blackened by the long, dark, frigid nights.

Seriously, though, when I see lights up in January, they lift my spirits, just a little.

So let's do it! Let's start putting up (and keeping up) winter lights to help brighten the inky blackness.

Singalong! Different Drum by The Stone Poneys

Sometimes it feels like we were a lot more progressive in the past. Take this song by The Stone Poneys, about a young woman who just doesn't want to be tied to one man. I mean, this means that at least 50 years ago there was some pop culture support for the idea that a woman didn't necessarily need to be desperately trapping herself a husband. And they didn't even have the blogosphere and all its think pieces about the joys of singledome yet!

DIFFERENT DRUM
by The Stone Poneys

You and I travel to the beat of a diff'rent drum.
Oh, can't you tell by the way I run
Ev'ry time you make eyes at me. Wo oh.
You cry and you moan and say it will work out.
But honey child I've got my doubts.
You can't see the forest for the trees.

Oh, don't get me wrong. It's not that I'm knockin'.
It's just that I'm not in the market
For a girl who wants to love only me.
Yes, and I ain't sayin' you ain't pretty.
All I'm sayin's I'm not ready for any person,
Place or thing to try and pull the reins in on me.

So Goodbye, I'll be leavin'.
I see no sense in the cryin' and grievin'.
We'll both live a lot longer if you live without me.

Ruining Coachella.... maybe? Or probably not.

Get ready for it: the free-spirited love and acceptance of Coachella is in question.

Yesterday, its as revealed that the owner of the company that produces Coachella uses profits to fund anti-LGBTQ and anti-climate change groups.

Yep, when you don your flower crown and rock out to Beyoncé (does SHE know about this? Probably not! Beyoncé! You are better than this!) you are helping fund groups the work against the rights of LGBTQ individuals AND groups that fight climate change efforts.

Maybe?

Ugh, I hate it when things aren't black and white.

So, after these reports came out, Philip Anschutz, the man in question, released a statement in The Rolling Stone saying that he supports a number of charities and does not discriminate and none of the charities he "supports the rights of all people, regardless of sexual orientation."

He also claimed that whenever he found out his foundation was supporting dubious charities they immediately cut off that support.

It looks like we have one of three potential scenarios:

1) Philip Anschutz has a foundation that donates to a wide variety of causes, as many wealthy people do. He wasn't on top of everything they were donating to, and later found out that some of the charities they gave to were actually anti-LGBTQ or anti-climate change. When he found out this was happening, he immediately cancelled that support, horrified that his organization had gone down that path at all, and maybe yelled at a few people.

2) Philip Anschutz USED to be anti-LGBTQ and anti-climate change, and happily funded those efforts. Then later realized that he was wrong, or that it was bad PR, and stopped quietly, hoping no one would notice.

3) Philip Anschutz is currently anti-LGBTQ and anti-climate change and has tried to quietly fund these initiatives as much as he could, without damaging the reputation of his company. Then, just now, when reports came out about it, he ceased the support.

All three of these scenarios could be true, although if he's not lying, then scenarios one and two are most likely.

So that's actually pretty okay. Coachella is a bit marred, perhaps, but not ruined.

To be safe, I propose that his foundation gets watched with hawklike vigilance for a while to see if he "accidentally" starts supporting a terrible cause again. In the meantime, feel free to buy your $400 tickets (and see BEYONCÉ!!!) and party on with loving and open, but cautious, hearts.

Learning! Roundup: Crafty ants, gene editing, the return of Bill Nye, cognitive distortions, and more!

Learning! Roundup: Ants are crafty with tools, we can edit genes in babies, Bill Nye is coming back, and more! Learning is fun.
Photo Credit: Rodrigo Menezes (Wikimedia Commons)

Ants Getting Crafty

Think that the crafting of tools is something that only humans and clever primates do? Oh, and crows and a bunch of animals. But I bet you never thought ANTS would do it! Ants! (Okay, pause and make your Zoolander joke about an ant-sized school and then come back to me.) Turns out that when ants need to transport something like honey around, they craft tiny little sponges to soak it up and bring it home. Clever, clever ants.

Personality Trumps IQ

New research shows that IQ is even more meaningless than we thought. It's been commonly thought that IQ predicts life success, but it turns out that your personality is actually more important than your IQ. Comforting if your IQ isn't as high as you would have hoped, discouraging if you've got a high IQ and low ability to send thoughtful follow-up emails and show up on time for meetings. Luckily, unlike IQ, these other traits can be taught later in life.

Gene Editing

It has begun. We are entering Gattaca. Gene editing in human babies is now here. So far, one little girl named Layla was dying of leukaemia, until she was treated with gene-edited cells that took care of that pesky issue. It's thought that in 2017 we could save dozens of lives, and then the number of steps to "designer babies" is as long or short as your faith in the human race.

Bill Nye is Back!

Now here's a reboot from the 90s I can get excited about: Bill Nye's new Netflix show will be released in 2017. He is going to save the world.

A New Organ?

A new organ has been discovered inside the human body. You read that right. A NEW ORGAN. It's called the mesentery and it lives in your digestive tract and it's been there all along and nobody knew!

15 Common Cognitive Distortions

Our brains lie to us a lot, guys. They take shortcuts and make assumptions and fill in the blanks with past data and we have no idea. Most of the time, this is fine. It's efficient. It allows us to spend our time thinking about how to save the world and not processing what that funny shape is in the middle of the room (it's a table). Sometimes, though, they lead us astray and help reinforce biases, stereotypes, and all the bad-news "isms" in the world. Familiarity is the first step in winning the war against them, so learn the 15 most common cognitive distortions and don't let your brain trick you into been a close-minded dummy.

Awesome Award: Debbie Harry's Clothing Line

In case you were unaware, Debbie Harry holds a 100% irrefutable lifelong membership in The Coolest of the Cool Humans Club. That is what makes this announcement so FREAKING AWESOME!!!

Debby Harry is Teaming Up With Artist Shepard Fairey to Create a Clothing Line.

No joke! It's really happening!

Shepard Fairey, if you didn't know (I didn't), is a graphic artist and social activist behind such work as the Obama Hope Portrait and so many other cool pieces! (Check them out here, I personally love love love Peace and Justice.)

These two are going to make the most awesome clothing of all time. Giving them the Awesome Award is almost pointless, because they are so much more awesome than I will ever be. But I can shout from down here, among the lamebrains and wannabes and be one of the many lifting up the awesomeness of this new venture.

I can't wait to see it, I can't wait to wish I could afford to buy it all.

Oh, and in case you think that it's only worth showcasing young Debbie Harry in photos, here are some from the last decade, maintaining her status as the absolute coolest:

Me & Ryan Gosling, just trying to read

Here's a fun throwback! I think this is around 2002, Ryan and I were chilling (with a cat, of course). I was just trying to get a little reading done, but dear sweet Ry Ry doesn't really like attention being elsewhere. He was so cute, can you blame him?

Being Better

If you're still wondering how you can be a better person, here are some ideas. It's a lot to do all at once (I have a hard time remembering all 10 Commandments, let alone all this!), but pick one that sticks out to you and try that. See how it goes.

Alternatively, if you need a lower-pressure way to feel like a better person this year, remember: you are taller than a flea! That is something! Take joy in the little details.

Challenge Accepted: Trying the Keto Diet

It's been a while since I did a food challenge, so why not take a skeptical step into the world of keto diets?

Skeptical because it eliminates so much, and because keto diet enthusiasts make pretty lofty claims about the benefits (see below). It's also a weird mental leap to track and restrict my intake of vegetables. Aren't vegetables supposed to be the be-all-end-all of a healthy diet? All vegetables all the time?

Let's see how this goes.

What is Keto?

A keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that puts your body into a state of ketosis, which means that your body is using fat and ketones for energy, not carbs and sugar. In life, an average person's diet is going to consist off 200-500g of carbs a day. A keto diet is 15-30. Big difference.

Keto claims many benefits, including improving many types of cancer and diabetes, epilepsy, Alzeihmer's, Parkinson's, and weight loss. I've also read claims of increasing mental focus and energy, reducing acne, and normalizing blood pressure. Phew! That is a lot of benefits, most of which I will have no way to measure.

What Do You Leave Behind?

As with most diets, you leave behind many sources of happiness: no sugary foods, no grains, no starchy foods, no tubers (bye bye french fries), no legumes, as well as very restricted fruit and alcohol.

What Do You Get?

The first thing you get is a new life where you read nutritional labels and do a lot of basic addition.

The second is an intense need for a decent food tracking app so that you don't have to carry a spreadsheet of everything you've eaten. I haven't yet found one I love, but am currently making do with the Stupid Simple Keto app.

In terms of the actual food you get to eat, there are a lot of delicious options! Because fat is a-okay, you still get a lot of tasty and filling meals and snacks. Cheese and avocados are your friend! I can get behind almost any diet in which cheese and avocados are my friend.

Also: fat bombs. This is a diet where FAT BOMBS are a thing! Need a snack and can't have carbs? Make little bite-sized treats that are basically 100% fat and taste so so so so good.

So basically, what I'm saying is that this diet is half torture, half ridiculous indulgence.

What About Meat?

Keto diets are typically really high in meat and I'm a vegetarian. Tricky.

At first I thought I would still be able to have beans and legumes and was pretty excited about that, but I was dead wrong, thanks to the starchiness of most legumes. I can get protein from my favourite sources, however: eggs, cheese, and peanut butter. Yumyumyumyum! Also, some veggies are pretty good for protein.

For a Month and the Rest of Our Lives

My boyfriend and I are going doing a one month trial that he intends to be the start of a lifelong relationship with ketosis. I am ready to commit to this one month to start, with the caveat that buying groceries for the first week of this was INSANELY expensive and I might just throw it all out the window if it keeps costing this much.

I'll let you know how it goes!

ADDED NOTE: I entered the Pacific Blue Cross' New Year's Resolution Challenge, promising to cut sugar (hey, what a coincidence, you don't eat sugar on keto!) Vote for me?

Easy Resolutions for Instant Zen: Get Read of Technology-Induced Stress in One Easy Step

It's January 2nd, so you might think it's too late to talk about resolutions. Well, first of all, it's never too late for anything! In life! Just do it! You're capable! (etc etc etc) Second, better late than never, because otherwise a lot of things would never happen.

So anyways, if you want to have a less technologically stressful 2017, here are my best Instant Zen, Get Rid of Technology-Induced Stress In One Easy Step Resolutions for Feeling Successful and Accomplishing Things:

Unsubscribe from email lists you don't actually want to be on. Instead of just mindlessly deleting them every time they roll in, take 5 extra seconds and unsubscribe. Suddenly the daily flood of spammy emails reduces to a trickle and life feels just that much easier.

Take control of your newsfeed! Unfollow people who are a part of your life but post too much crap. What kind of crap? You decide! Do they only post political junk? Is it all bikini selfies all the time? Are they always spewing anger and negativity? Or maybe their relentless positivity is just too much for you to handle right now. It's okay. Unfollowing is the easiest and best way to avoid that without the social awkwardness of unfriending, while making your newsfeed into things you actually care about seeing.

(But, you know, go ahead and unfriend people if you want. Power to you!)

(Also, take note here whether you are just turning off people who have different opinions than yours - I mean, new year new newsfeed and do whatever you want, but it's good for you to see that the entire world doesn't agree with you sometimes.)

Turn off all notifications on your phone except for the most urgent (like, maybe you want your phone to actually ring when you get a phone call... Maybe. It's up to you.) Everything else you can see when you obsessively check in on your apps, which, let's be honest, you were doing even with notifications turned on, anyways. Every moment your phone doesn't chirp at you is a moment you get to enjoy life a little bit more.

The feeling of turning these things off is like a dream. It's like when you start watching a movie that you think is going to be "so bad it's good" and it turns out to just be horribly bad* and you suddenly realize that no one is making you watch this and you can stop and watch something that's actually good and life suddenly feels a million times better. The power! The power of turning things off! YOU HAVE THAT POWER. Feel the power and the zen flow through your body as you disconnect yourself from the emails and notifications that cloud your life! FEEL IT!

*Zathura. I had such high hopes for you. You are basically Jumanji in space and what could be better than that? Turns out, everything. Everything is better. Goodbye, Zathura.
