singalong! solsbury hill
Around the age of 19 I learned that listening to Peter Gabriel is (apparently) something a person is supposed to be embarrassed about. I learned this because my sister wrote some kind of confession post on Myspace (because that was the thing at the time) about finally not being embarrassed about loving Peter Gabriel, and since one of my sister's primary areas of expertise is cool music, I figured she was on to something.
Now, make no mistake, I'm not, nor have I ever been, some massive Peter Gabriel fan. I pretty much know his big hits and that's it. I probably couldn't even name them all. But oh man oh man, do I love the ones I know. Especially Solsbury Hill. One of the loveliest songs ever for sure. I feel my heart boom boom boom every time he sings about his heart going boom boom boom, and not in a weird flirty/sexy way. In a "this is what it's like to be human" way. So sing along with Peter Gabriel, and feel no shame. Because why would you?

SOLSBURY HILL
Peter Gabriel
Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
I just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said "Grab your things,
I've come to take you home."
To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
"Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."
(Back home.)
When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" I said "You can keep my things,
They've come to take me home."
national cat day!
It's almost over, but technically there's still time to celebrate: it's National Cat Day, people! As my boss pointed out, this is clearly different than every other day of the year when cat photos are posted and loved on the internet. (The key difference being that we are now posting cute cate pictures while talking about the fact that we're posting them for National Cat Day.)
To celebrate, here is an oldie but a goodie. Probably the cutest of all the cute cat videos that have ever existed for all of time: the Mommy cat snuggling her baby.

Oh, Hair. Why dost thou torture me so?
Dudes, back off for a second here, you're not going to understand this. Unless you're a dude with long hair, although still probably not because I don't think dudes ever have the same relationship with their hair ladies have. Ladies with short hair, feel free to move on as well. Ladies (or dudes) with long, curly hair - YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! Oh, wait, I should probably tell you what I'm talking about first, shouldn't I?
It happened again tonight. The dastardly thing my hair does when it's been up in something resembling a "do" all day and then I take it out before getting ready for bed, and lo and behold, my hair looks amazing. Better than ever. All bouncy curls and major body and total beauteousness.
It's like my hair is taunting me. It's saying "I'm capable of looking really really really good - like good enough for a hair commercial and that's not bragging, it's just the truth - but I choose not to do so until you are home and by yourself and getting ready to go to bed so that you can torment yourself wondering if you maybe could go out again but that would be ridiculous because it's 11:29pm and by the time you met up with your friends (who you turned down on hanging out with in favour of a ride home and non-restaurant-priced food) it would be like midnight and they would be all 'why did you come all the way back here, we're all getting ready to go home!' and you'd be all '...because my hair looked really good?' and you'd feel like a fool for two whole reasons. The first being that everyone knows it's silly to go home and then go back out again just because your hair looks good, even if everyone secretly wants to do it. The second being that it's raining out and so your hair would totally be ruined by the time you got there. So now your stuck inside with amazing hair and NO ONE to see it, and you can't take pictures of it to post online either because only 15 year old girls who are insecure do that, and you don't want everyone to think you're an insecure 15 year old, do you? Do you??? HA! Take THAT!"
To make matters worse, this amazing looking hair that emerges when I take it out of an updo is not consistent. It's not like I can just put my hair up all day and then take it out before going out somewhere in the evening and know it will look good. No - because that would be too easy and my hair can't make things easy for me. Not when it is trying to ruin my life. Yeah, that's right, I said it, my life is ruined because my hair won't make me look like a hair commercial on command. It's not vain - you know you all think the same thing and are just too afraid to admit it out loud! Well I've SAID IT!
Okay so... I'm going to bed now. With amazing hair. Stay tuned for horrible morning hair and possible weeping that I will try to cover up as hysterical laughter, because somehow laughing hysterically all alone in my room is better than uncontrollable weeping.

I LOVE BABY THINGS!!!!
Baby things are by far some of the best things ever. Whether they be of the animal or human variety, they are the best. Probably not baby plants though. I'm pretty sure grown-up plants are better because they have all that fruit and flowers and the other things that you actually planted the plant to get. Baby plants are just rife with the threat that you will forget to water them and they will die.
Do you not believe me that all baby things excepting plants are the best? Let me convince you.
Reason #1: They are tiny and tiny automatically means cuter.
Picture a tiny thing. It's cute, right?
Reason #2: They are tiny versions of otherwise large things, making the tiny-cuteness factor much more prominent.
Now picture a regular sized thing and then picture a tiny version of the same thing right beside it. Even CUTER, right?
Reason #3: They FIT IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND SOMETIMES!!!!
Reason #4: They rub their ears and faces.
For some reason, grown-ups tend to stop doing this. Or it just makes them look tired and haggard and twitchy.
Reason #5: Sometimes they look at stuff and then look at you and it's like they recognize you even though you know they don't have the cognitive capacity to actually recognize you yet it makes you feel like they do and then you feel all special because the baby thing recognized YOU! This means you are special!
'Nuff said.
Reason #6: They try to do things they don't have the motor functioning to actually do yet.
Have you seen a kitten try to pounce? Or a baby human try to walk? With the almost standing and the falling and the wobbling? It's pretty much the best thing EVER.
Reason #7: They clean themselves.
Have you seen a baby animal clean itself? HAVE YOU? How much of you died from seeing that? Did you even survive? Are you sure that you're not dead right now? (PS: human babies do not clean themselves, but are still very cute while being cleaned by others, but in a very different way. So this one mostly only applies to baby animals. Sorry baby humans, you have been one-upped.)
All these reasons, and more, turn me into a squealing ball of happiness. My body doesn't know what to do with all the cuteness in front of its face, so it literally starts to curl in on itself. It's amazing. And kind of painful, but in that really good way.
Note: Roomie came up with #4 and #5. Credit given.

This is really the best one ever. It is the entire inspiration for this post. Holding a kitten in your hand? Or a puppy? Or a HUMAN? It's so amazing it's like the WTF of amazingness!!! This is the first time I've ever typed "WTF" in my life so I must be serious. Plus, did you know that there are some animals that are so small when they're babies that you could hold MORE THAN ONE of them in your hand? I'm not even joking. Go ahead and die right now, there's no way you can continue to live with even the concept of that much cuteness available.

Get Sucked Into A Book - This is Awesome
From (you guessed it) This is Awesome, who got it from Lissy Larichia's Flickr page. She calls it Get Back Into Your Book. Beautiful. Awesome.
I think my personal fave for geek reasons is Harry Potter (or I guess that's Hermione getting sucked back in.) For beauty reasons I've got to go with Alice. Wow.
